After a decade of stony silence and intransigence by the Howard government, our new PM, Kevin Rudd, did what many Australians have felt it was right to do, and apologized to the Stolen Generation, those Aboriginals who were taken from their families. I was so glad I voted for this man and proud to be a mamber of a community which finally realized that we can't go forward until we look back and acknowledge the past.
Our Opposition leader, Brendan Nelson was thoroughly heckled as he tried to downplay the apology, virtually calling it unnecesary as "we" hadn't done it and those who did, after all, did it with the best intentions. What a load of crap!
Hopefully, this will bring about some small sense of justice to our Aboriginal fellow-countrymen with the knowledge that we acknowledge the wrong in what was done to them and our fervent desire to work towards a better Australia.
