The comm is apparently dead in the water after the owner decided to post the only 3 stories she received with no voting round and has since refused to communicate with anyone on the comm. I've pulled out as the prompts have mostly been boring and narrow with a heavy het bias and the constant lack of communication with the mods has become annoying. Anyway this is my entry for the last round before this one. The prompt was to write one het and one slash piece, using one quote as a prompt for both. I almost took a skip but the mod couldn't tell me if I still had one or not (turns out I did) so I managed to come up with these two little ficlets. Hope you like.

Title: A Question Asked
Characters/Pairing: Ducky/Jenny
Genre: Het
Quote used: He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever. (Chinese proverb)
Word Count: 499

I had to admit to being a little surprised that Jennifer hadn’t told Jethro about the birthday ball. He looked a little surprised too, come to think of it. I suppose I was more surprised that she’d asked me to escort her, though the minute I saw her floating down the staircase from her office, such feelings fled my head and all I could think of was how proud I was to be given such an honor.

She took my arm and bowed her head graciously to the team, all of whom looked rather like stunned mullets at seeing their Director in her ballgown, her hair swept up fetchingly. I couldn’t help grinning at them as I swept her from the room.

I handed her into the limousine then climbed in beside her, surprised once more as she reached over and took my hand in hers.

“Thank you for escorting me, Ducky,” she said.

“I’d rather assumed Jethro would be your escort this evening,” I replied as the driver pulled out into the street.

She shook her head. “Jethro has somewhere else he’d rather be this evening,” she replied.

“Not another redhead,” I said, shaking my head in exasperation. “When on Earth is he going to learn?” Suddenly realizing my gaffe, I spluttered onward, attempting to cover up my clumsiness. “Not that there’s anything wrong with redheads, my dear.”

“It’s fine, Ducky. I knew what you meant.” She gave me an impish grin and I saw then why Jethro had fallen in love with her. “Not a redhead this time. This one has brown hair and green eyes and none of the equipment Jethro’s former loves have had.”

It took me a moment to catch her drift and when I did it took me a few moments more to respond. “Anthony?”

“Don’t sound so shocked,” she said. “You mean you haven’t noticed the way he looks at DiNozzo? I know that look of longing. I’ve seen it in his eyes before.”

‘For you’ I think but I didn’t voice it aloud. Instead I leaned forward and kissed her gently on the cheek. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” she said softly, giving my hand a gentle squeeze. “I still love Jethro enough to want him to be happy and I think DiNozzo’s the one person who can finally achieve that. Besides,” she kissed my mouth then pulled away, “I have my eye on someone else. Someone I think will make me happy too.”

I felt my jaw drop and my eyes widen at her words. “I had sometimes hoped but I would never have dared to ask… to even imagine that you and I…”

“Now there’s a first,” she said with a laugh. “Donald Mallard lost for words.” She leaned forward conspiratorially and whispered, “I knew you’d never ask, Ducky, so being the modern woman I am, I decided to take the bull by the horns.”

“I am very glad you did,” I murmured as I pulled her into my arms.

Title: A Question Answered
Characters/Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Genre: Slash, AU epilogue for Under Covers.
Quote used: He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever. (Chinese proverb)
Word Count: 453

I was still feeling pretty woozy by the time we reached my car. McGee was more or less supporting my weight while Abby fumbled with keys, trying to find the right one to unlock the car.

“Maybe I should go with you,” McGee said. He nodded toward where I sagged against him. “He’s still pretty out of it.”

“He’s standing right here,” I said. “I’m fine. I could probably drive myself home.”

“No, you couldn’t,” said a familiar voice from behind us and then Gibbs was standing there, taking the keys from Abby’s hand and pushing the keypad to unlock the doors. He turned and pulled me more or less upright then manhandled me into the passenger seat. “Go home, you two,” he added. “I’ve got this.”

“We don’t mind,” Abby replied, perhaps seeing the look of horror that crossed my face. Gibbs isn’t known for his stellar driving skills and I had a momentary thought of making it out alive of the undercover assignment only to wind up in Ducky’s morgue as a result of a car wreck.

“He’ll be fine.” Gibbs made a shooing motion with his hands then walked around and climbed behind the wheel. He peeled out of the lot so fast I felt like I’d left my stomach back on the sidewalk.

“You know, it’s probably a good idea to slow down a little, Boss,” I said, leaning my head back against the seat and trying to look relaxed. “I really don’t want to have to be cleaning puke off the upholstery when I’ve got a concussion.”

He looked over at me then back at the road in time to swerve back into our own lane and avoid an oncoming cab. “I think I’ve been going slow long enough,” he said as he swung the wheel and pulled the car into the kerb with a screech of the tires that made me wonder how much a new set was going to cost me.

I peeled my fingers off the dashboard and sat up a little. “Boss?” I asked, wondering if the concussion was actually a lot more serious than Ducky thought.
Gibbs put a finger to my lips then leaned across the console between us and kissed me, very gently on the mouth.

“This slow enough for you?” he asked.

I nodded dopily then reached out and grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him toward me again, till I could feel his breath wafting warmly across my skin.

“You can speed up now,” I said.

He grinned, kissed me again, harder this time, then started up the car and slammed his foot down on the accelerator. “Hold on,” he said, “it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
